In this group of plants all have names that reflect spring themes! A fun way to pay tribute to this fleeting but powerful time of the year.
A “spring garden” doesn’t have to center around plants that bloom in the spring, but rather can be a collection of plants and cultivars based on their spring-themed names. Here are spring themed annual plants, perennials, shrubs and trees.
Abelia schumannii ‘Bumblebee’ – Zone 6-9. 3-4’ shrub with pink blooms summer through fall. Prefers moist soil in part shade through full sun.
Azalea ‘Spring Party’ - Zone 5, deciduous Azalea, early season rose pink blooms. ’Easter Bonnet’ – A Gold Cup Azalea with large, mid season flowers in blush pink.
Camellia japonica cultivars – All hardy to zone 6, part shade and evergreen. ‘April Remembered’ – 9’tall with ivory rosette flowers edged in rose pink. ‘April Dawn’ – Pink and white blend, rose-form flowers on 8’ shrub. ‘April Kiss’ – Compact 6’ shrub with deep-pink formal-double flower. Cherry Tomatoes ‘Red Robin’ – 60-70 days to maturity. This heirloom tomato is a tiny 12” plant that grows well indoors or in containers and produces ½” tasty fruit.
Columbine (Aquilegia hybrida) ‘Spring Magic’ – Zone 3-9. 2” flowers on compact plants bloom spring and summer. 14” tall, part to full shade, drought tolerant when established.
Crabapple (Malus) ‘Spring Snow’ – Zone 3a-8. A fruitless crabapple perfect for sidewalk areas where fruit would be messy. Large, prolific white flowers in spring and yellow-orange fall foliage. 25’ tall x 15’ wide.
Daylily (Hemerocalis) ‘Siloam June Bug’- Gold flowers with burgundy eye zones ‘Spring Frolic’ – Yellow spring-blooming daylily that often reblooms in the fall.
Eggplant ‘Easter Egg’ – Easy to grow from seeds, the small, white ornamental fruits are inedible and only grow to about a typical egg size.
Escallonia ‘Apple Blossom’ – Zone 7. Broadleaf evergreen with light pink summer flowers. Blooms sporadically through frost. 5-6’ dense shrub with small thorns.
Foamflower (Tiarella) ‘Spring Symphony’ – Zone 3-8. Compact shade-loving perennial with pink flower spikes to 14” tall. Foliage is dark green with black midribs and veining.
Forsythia intermedia ‘Spring Glory’ – Zone 3-9. Slow growing deciduous shrub is covered in bright yellow blooms each spring before the foliage grows. 8’tall x 6’ wide. Full sun.
Ginkgo biloba ‘Spring Grove’ – Zone 4-9. Dwarf form grows to 4’with green spring and summer foliage and yellow autumn foliage.
Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Shamrock’ – Zone 5-9. Summer blooming deciduous shrub grows 4’x4’. Pink sterile flower clusters on this Lacecap hydrangea. Part shade and rich soil.
Inkberry (Ilex glabra) ‘Shamrock’ – Zone 4-9. Broadleaf evergreen shrub prefers moist soil and full sun to part shade. Male pollinator needed for blue or black winter berries. More compact than species at 4’x4’ and easy to grow.
Japanese Cut-leaf Maple (Acer palmatum dissectum) ‘Spring Delight’ – Zone 5-10 bright green leaves emerge each spring tipped and edged in vibrant red. A cascading maple that will grow to about 6-10’ tall and 5-8’ wide. Part shade.
Magnolia kobus leobneri ‘Spring Snow’ – Zone5-8. Small spring-blooming tree 15-30’ tall. Deciduous magnolia with attractive white flowers.
Phlox divaricata ‘May Breeze’ – Zone 3-9. Late spring flowers are fragrant and bright white. Evergreen ground cover or rock garden plant grows a maximum of 12” tall.
Rock Cress (Arabis) ‘Spring Charm’ – Zone 3-7. Fragrant mauve-pink flowers on 6-8” tall plants. Full sun to part shade, well drained soil. Ground cover or rock garden.
Rosa ‘St. Patrick’ – Zone 5-11. A yellow blend hybrid tea rose that was an All-America Rose Selection in 1996. ‘Maytime’ – Zone 4 with protection. A pink blend shrub rose with fragrant flower sprays.
Salvia ‘May Night’ – Zones 3-8. This sage is a perennial plant with summer and fall blooms. Deep violet-blue flower spikes 2-3’ tall grow best in full sun and moist soil.
Serviceberry (Amelanchier) ‘Spring Flurry’ – Zone 3. Small tree to 20’-35’ with white flowers late winter through spring and orange fall foliage. Purple edible fruit. Deciduous.
Thuja plicata ‘Spring Grove’ – Zone 5-7. Fast growing Arborvitae reaches 20-30’ tall and 3-6 wide. Evergreen conifer adds color and structure to the landscape. Evenly moist soil preferred.
Yarrow (Achillea) ‘Appleblossom’ – Zone 3-9. Soft-pink summer flowers and aromatic foliage are highly attractive. Full sun, drought tolerant once established.
